A meltdown is not a tantrum and not a choice. It's a nervous system past its limit. Your job during one is not to teach, correct, or fix—it's to be the least threatening thing in the room. Teaching happens later, and briefly.
Instead of"Calm down. You need to calm down."
Try"I'm here." (Then nothing.)
Instead of"Why are you acting like this? What happened?"
Try(No questions. Questions are demands, and they're already past capacity.)
Instead of"If you don't stop, you're losing screen time."
Try"You're safe. I'm not going anywhere."
Safety comes first, but how you hold it matters. Move objects and people away from the child rather than grabbing the child—physical control usually escalates a PDA meltdown fast.
Instead of"Stop hitting! We do NOT hit in this house!"
Try"I won't let anyone get hurt." (Once, calmly, while making space.)
Instead ofHolding or restraining to force calm
TryMove the sibling out, move the breakables, stay low and to the side.
Instead of"Stop it, people are watching."
Try"We're going somewhere quieter."
Instead of"If you don't stop, we're never coming back here."
Try"This is hard. Let's find a quiet spot."
When the storm passes, there's a fragile window—exhausted, ashamed, raw. This is not the teaching moment. Anything that sounds like a review of what just happened can restart the whole thing.
Instead of"Are you done? Are you ready to talk about it?"
Try"That was hard. I'm glad you're safe." (Then let it be.)
Instead of"You need to apologize to your brother."
TryWater, a snack, a blanket, silence. Repair comes later, and forced apologies aren't repair.
Hours later, sometimes the next day. Short, warm, no lecture. The goal is that meltdowns don't cost them the relationship.

Try"Yesterday was rough. I love you the same on the rough days."
Instead of"What are you going to do differently next time?"
Try"Next time, should I stay close or give you space?" (One question. Take the answer seriously.)

Meltdowns are data. Each one says the demand load ran past capacity somewhere upstream—often hours before the thing that "caused" it. If they're getting more frequent, the answer is rarely a better in-the-moment response; it's lowering the total load: school pressure, schedule density, sensory environment, hidden demands.
