Ending screen time

Instead of"Turn it off now, time's up."

Try"Screens off in 5. What's a good stopping point?"

Instead of"I'm taking the iPad."

Try"Let me know when you've saved your game."

Instead of"You've been on that thing all day."

Try"Dinner's ready. Device stays here."

Give them control of the stopping point within your timeframe. Never yank the device—for a PDA child that's not a consequence, it's an ambush, and the fallout costs more than the five minutes you saved.

Switching activities

Instead of"Stop what you're doing, we need to…"

Try"In 10 minutes, we're switching to…"

Instead of"Come here right now."

Try"I'll be in the kitchen when you're ready."

Countdown warnings help, but be specific. "Soon" feels more threatening than "7 minutes"—vague time is time someone else controls.

Coming inside

Instead of"Time to come in!"

Try"Door's open. Snack on the counter."

Instead of"Get inside right now."

Try"I'm going in. Join me when you're ready."

Make inside more appealing than demanding they leave outside. Pull, don't push.

Leaving fun places

Instead of"We're leaving in 5 minutes whether you like it or not."

Try"5 more minutes. What's one last thing you want to do?"

Instead of"Time to go, say goodbye."

Try"I'm walking to the car. See you there."

Let them have the "last" thing. It gives closure and control, and it usually costs you ninety seconds.

Unexpected changes of plan

Instead of"Change of plans, we're doing X instead."

Try"Something changed. Here's what's happening now: [brief facts]."

Instead of"I know you wanted to, but…"

Try"This is hard. The new plan is [X]. What would help?"

Acknowledge the disappointment briefly, state the facts, then offer one real choice inside the new reality. Don't argue the old plan back and forth—it's gone, and relitigating it keeps the loss alive.

Why this works

A transition has three demands hidden inside it: stop what you chose, start what I chose, and do it on my schedule. For a demand-avoidant nervous system, that's three alarms going off at once.

Each swap above removes one alarm. A stopping point they pick. A warning with a real number in it. A version of you that's moving toward the next thing instead of standing over them. You still get the transition—you're just not the thing their body has to fight to get there.

When the transition still blows up

Some days no script works, because the tank was already empty before you said a word. That's information, not failure. Log what came before—hunger, a hard school day, too many transitions already—and lower the demand load where you can.
